Fin fan coolers, also known as air-cooled heat exchangers (ACHEs), are industrial cooling units that use motor-driven fans to force or draw air across a finned tube bundle, removing heat from the process fluid flowing inside the tubes. Unlike shell and tube or plate heat exchangers that require a cooling water supply, fin fan coolers reject heat directly to the ambient air, making them well suited to remote locations, water-scarce environments, and large-scale process facilities where cooling water availability or cost is a constraint. In a forced draft unit, the fan pushes ambient air upward through the tube bundle from below, while in an induced draft unit, the fan sits above the bundle and draws air through from beneath. Induced draft configurations offer more uniform airflow distribution across the bundle and better protection of the fan from hot process air, while forced draft units are generally easier to maintain and have lower structural requirements.

Fin fan coolers are used to cool a wide range of process fluids including hydrocarbon gases and liquids, lube oils, compressor discharge streams, amine solutions, glycol, and water-based process fluids. Material selection for tubes and headers is guided by the fluid composition and operating pressure and temperature.
Air-cooled heat exchangers rely on the temperature difference between the process fluid and the ambient air to drive heat rejection. In the UAE where summer ambient temperatures regularly exceed 45 degrees Celsius, this temperature differential is reduced, requiring larger surface areas or higher airflow rates to achieve the same duty compared to cooler climates. Our design process accounts for local ambient conditions to ensure adequate cooling capacity year-round.
